Social norms

Challenge: Your organization already has a culture and norms, how to influence it?

Solution: Create transparency on the norms you want and create the ability to speak up

Social norms are what makes communities work, they are the unspoken and often unconscious rules, that help you be IN or OUT of the community. It is an evolutionary need for us to be IN and unfortunately often we create the IN feeling by defining, who is OUT.

For our purpose striving towards a strong risk & compliance culture, we explore how we can identify, clarify and influence social norms.

Here is a structure, how you can start this process of changing the norms for the benefit of all stakeholders:

  1. Transparency: Identify and communicate your expectations

  2. Understanding: Create the opportunity to discuss and debate

  3. Commitment: Use internal influencers and respected peers ras ole models

  4. Ability: Demonstrate, teach, train

  5. Practice: Do, repeat, learn from mistakes
